FAHM (Filipino-American History Month) is UF’s yearly cultural event held in October. FAHM is geared towards enriching the student body at UF by showcasing Filipino customs and traditions as well as raising pertinent issues affecting Filipinos and Filipino-Americans today.
This year exhibits the best performances and activities yet! Opening with Ate-Kuya-Ading Week (learn more about the AKA Program here) at the beautiful Lake Wauburg, FAHM kicks it off with AKA Week, carries on with the Gawad Kalinga Forum, and holds a Dance Workshop with AKM and Filipino Food Night, Heart of Asia, a Scavenger Hunt, and the ultimate Closing Ceremony to follow.
Can’t wait to celebrate FAHM already? Then here are each of the event descriptions & their Event Pages:
FAHM 2011: [Egg]Roll with Gawad Kalinga
Gawad Kalinga (GK) means to “give care” in Filipino. It is a Philippine-based poverty alleviation and nation-building movement. Last Summer, about 10 of our very own FSA pamilya went to the Philippines to help build homes for the less fortunate.
FAHM 2011 brings to you [Egg]Roll with GK where you are not only able to enjoy a delicious Filipino dish, but you are also able to give back to our community. We will be holding a school supply drive in which you are able to donate extra pens, pencils, highlighters, etc. that you may have. You can even bring old notebooks with leftover papers. All these items will go towards FSA’s Gawad Kalinga trip to the Philippines next summer and will be given to all the families. Just think about the difference YOU are making.
Our FSA pamilya who went on the GK trip will also share their most memorable experiences with you. Learn about what GK means to them and how their lives were changed.
[AKM 2011 + FAHM 2011] Rhythm Defined
Asian Kaleidoscope Month and the Filipino American History Month have teamed up this year to bring you RHYTHM DEFINED.
Rhythm Defined is a dance workshop featuring two of the best Filipino American dancers in the nation, Chad Mayate and Law Devera of POREOTICS. They will be speaking about being Asian American in the world of dance at our breakfast/ meet and greet with the choreographers. Then get ready to get your swagger on because later in the day they will be teaching their own hip hop pieces.
